ESL One Manila to have different competing format

With just little more than two months away from ESL One Manila, ESL One had announced that the tournament format will be changed.

The typical single elimination format is ruled out in favour of a GSL style group stage before knockout stage.

This format was last used during the Frankfurt Major and enables double elimination whilst making it more convenient to maintain schedules.

The schedule are as follows:

  • Match one: Team A vs. Team B
  • Match two: Team C vs. Team D
  • Winners’ match (WM): Winner of match one vs. winner of match two – winner advances to upper bracket
  • Elimination match (EM): Loser of match one vs. loser of match two – loser drops to lower bracket
  • Decider match: Loser of WM vs. winner of EM – winner advances to upper bracket and loser drops to lower bracket

A double elimination group stage also meant that the tournament would be extended by one more day, starting on Friday, April 22 with initial group stage games.

The fixture would not take place at the Mall of Asia Arena, but is set to be broadcasted live on Twitch.

Since the announcement regarding the changes was made, Team Secret had made a comeback and accepted their invitation to the tournament.
