Korean team MVP Phoenix has added another Dota 2 trophy under their belt after their victory over Vega Squadron at the WePlay Season 3 final to improve their trophy tally this year to 2.
But the journey was not one of smooth sailing. In fact, the team had seemed to slump since their victory at DotaPit Season 4, and yet the players overcame everything; disinterest in their home country, lack of financial problem and youth talents.
Unfortunately, MVP appeared to have an impeccable read on Vega’s plays after the two teams encountered each other in the group stages. The Koreans defeated Vega 2-0 in the upper bracket final and once again gave them no quarter in the finals.
It could also be argued that luck was on their side as the new Dota 2 patch almost seemed to be tailored to fit with the Koreans’ agro playing style meticulously. This could easily be seen in every game they played in the tournament, even in the 3-1 grand final victory against Vega.
Kim “QO” Seon-yeop was once again the MVP for Phoenix, playing excepationally against Slardar in the grand final and causing all kinds of hell for their Ukrainian opponents.
Another worthy note is the debut of the new Evil Geniuses (EG) team, even as the North Americans began their campaign meekly. They just survived an early deficit to the Greeks of Ad Finem before losing to both eventual grand finalists in their remaining group stage games.
Forced to fight from the lower brackets, they eliminated Team Spirit, Elite Wolves, and Team Empire before finally being eliminated by Vega altogether in a narrow 2-1 series in the lower bracket final.
