Astralis trumps FaZe to claim IEM Katowice crown

Astralis retaliated from a map down to win their grand final encounter against FaZe Clan by 3-1 and finishing as champions of IEM Katowice 2017 (9-16 on de_cache, 16-12 on de_overpass, 16-12 on de_nuke and 16-13 on de_inferno).

The victory also consolidates Astralis’ claim as the World No.1 in the Counter Strike: Global Offensive discipline — a rank they earned since winning the ELEAGUE Major earlier this year.

However, the team appeared to be no more than mere mortals as they struggled to make an impact in map 1, de_cache. FaZe, who had little practice time with new signing Nikola “NiKo” Kovac, quickly won the five of the first six rounds to go 10-3 up, and it was smooth sailing from there on as the European team closed it down by 16-9 despite a late resurgence from Astralis.

It was more evenly in the second map de_overpass (Astralis’ first pick), but as the Danish team struggled to secure a pistol round they were unable to get ahead of FaZe — it was only thanks to a vital eco round won by a commanding Peter “dupreeh” Rasmussen 1v3 clutch  that they got the wind in their sails to cruise to a 16-12 win.

In more familiar hunting ground at de_nuke, Astralis sprinted to 10-5 before the interval, but FaZe soon rallied on CT to even out the map. Again, Astralis needed an eco round to break them and win 16-12.

And then it was at de_inferno that FaZe finally seems to remember that less than an hour ago they managed to close a map against Astralis. Building on that hope they managed to to return from 9-6 down to tie the map at 13-13.

But at that very moment, Astralis called a map-deciding timeout that halted the FaZe momentum, allowing them to win 3 rounds without reply to take the map, the IEM Season XI World Championship title and the $104,000 grand prize. Their support personnel, Andreas “Xvp9x” would also take home the title of Tournament MVP title.
