G2 Esports is the latest team revealed to have a direct invite to ESL One Cologne 2017.
ESL One: Cologne 2017, to be held at the Laxness Arena in the eponymous location will run from Friday, July 7th – Sunday, July 9th.
It is also the fourth edition of one the most popular Counter-Strike: Global Offensive premier events each year.
The French roster of G2 will have a spot in what could be their third premier event in the 2017 calendar year after being name in the list of teams to join in at the ESL event in Germany.
Amongst others already in the list are FaZe Clan, Fnatic, Ninja in Pyjamas, SK Gaming, Natus Vincere and Virtus.Pro.
G2’s inclusion will make for a remainder of nine spots, with five more teams to be given direct invites and four more through qualifiers from Europe, North America, and one more region that has yet to be announced.
However, the French team had often struggled for results this year, coming almost dead last in ELEAGUE and finishing 5th-8th at the StarLadder i-League StarSeries season 3, as well as failing to make it through in the DreamHack Las Vegas and IEM Worlds qualifiers.
Nonetheless, one can attribute their failings at the IEM qualifier to a recent roster shift, while their exit at the StarSeries was no less respectable since they were ousted by eventual champions FaZe Clan, who in this season proved themselves to be a fierce and worthy rival of Astralis, the team that ranks at the top of the world right now.
Still, just as G2 brush themselves up for the main event in two months time, they would be hoping for a little bit of luck this time around so as to avoid the giants of the game early into the tournament.
