PGL Krakow Major 2017: Gambit defeats Immortals to win title

Gambit Esports’s mixed roster overcame Brazilian team Immortals by 2-1 (4-16 on de_cobblestone, 16-11 on de_train, 16-10 on de_inferno) to become champions of PGL Major Krakow 2017.

Gambit were having a largely inconsistent time in finding form and results this year. Still, the Krakow event was headed for uncharted territory after teams such as FaZe Clan and Astralis suffered early exits, with FaZe being eliminated in the group stage altogether, while minnows such as BIG even managed to prevail against the likes of FaZe and SK gaming.

While this means that the trophy is essentially up for anyone’s grabs, Gambit, who defeated top seed Astralis in the last four, were quickly pummeled by the Brazilian squad in the first map of the grand final, de_cobblestone, who staved them off any chance of an eco and closed the map in almost no time at 16-4.

The second map on de_inferno began with either sides trading rounds, before Gambit finding solid foothold through quick executions to win five rounds straight, before Immortals kept it together and won two rounds through quad kills from  Ricardo “boltz” Prass  and Vito “kNgV-” Giuseppe, although Gambit were still able to secure a 9-6 lead by winning the last two rounds of the half.

Both sides then traded three consecutive rounds apiece to reach 12-9 after the break, before everyone appears to experience a sudden loss of concentration, leading to poor plays. It was after that in which Gambit finally got their definitive advantage and their 14th round with a triple from Rustem “mou” Telepov through a partial buy. With no money, Immortals were all but left to watch Gambit close the map.

Then, playing CT on the last map (de_Inferno), Gambit fired on all cylinders, winning triples and suppressing their adversaries on all aspects to get to a 11-4 lead before the break. On the verge of losing it all, Immortals tried to make a comeback by winning four consecutive rounds after the break, but a 1v3 clutch from Abay “HObbit” Khasenov broke their momentum and eventually closed the game for a Gambit victory.
