Esports tournament organizers ESL has made the announcement that they have invited Gambit to the next Intel Extreme Masters event, IEM Oakland in November.
IEM Oakland, which is set to kick-off on November 16 up through the weekend at The Oracle Arena, will see Gambit compete with 11 other teams for the majority of a $300,00 prize pool.
The teams will first play in round robin groups of six, with the winners of each group immediately seeded into the tournament’s sem-ifinals. Meanwhile, the second and third placed teams in both groups will advance to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. As is tradition, most of the playoffs — the quarterfinals and semi-finals will be best-of-three, while the grand-final will be best-of-five.
The teams currently heading to The Oracle Arena are:
- FaZe Clan
- G2 Esports
- SK Gaming
- Team Liquid
This occasion marks the second time thus far that Gambit has ever attended an ESL event since ESL One Cologne last year. The team had usually been denied invitations to major and premier tier events, but they were not to be denied their right since their victory at the PGL Krakow Major 2017.
Nonetheless, it is expected that Gambit, who jumped to fourth in world rankings after their victory at Krakow, would not have an easy time in Oakland either — just as it had been for them in the major.
Although there are clearly less teams than in the major and some to be determined participants, their opponents are usually ranked above, if not near Gambit.
